Ce groupe de lecture se penchera sur la pensée et la pratique politiques de George Jackson (1941-1971), révolutionnaire afro-américain incarcéré durant plus de onze ans à la prison de San Quentin en Californie, à travers la lecture de Soledad Brother (1970) et Blood In My Eye (1972). En nous familiarisant d’abord avec le diagnostic qu’il pose quant à ce qu’il appelle la « société captive », nous nous intéresserons ensuite à la stratégie et à l’amour révolutionnaires qu’il incarne et déploie. En faisant intervenir différentes propositions théoriques et politiques anticapitalistes, noires, anticoloniales, féministes, queers et écologistes, nous discuterons de l’héritage, de l’actualité et de l’utilité de Jackson. Quatre séances nous permettront d’aborder, chez Jackson mais aussi dans nos paramètres contemporains, la captivité, le capitalisme, le fascisme, la violence révolutionnaire ainsi que le rôle et le potentiel du désir dans la formulation et la matérialisation de transformations radicales.

George Jackson’s perfect disorder: desire, violence and transformation – Reading group – 2024-2025
This reading group will examine the political thought and practice of George Jackson (1941-1971), an African-American revolutionary incarcerated for over eleven years at San Quentin prison in California, through the reading of Soledad Brother (1970) and Blood In My Eye (1972). By first familiarizing ourselves with his diagnosis of what he calls “captive society”, we will then turn our attention to the revolutionary strategy and love he embodies and offers. Engaging with various anti-capitalist, black, anti-colonial, feminist, queer and ecologist theoretical and political proposals, we will discuss Jackson’s legacy, actuality and usefulness. Four sessions will allow us to address, in Jackson’s writings but also in our contemporary settings, captivity, capitalism, fascism, revolutionary violence and the role and potential of desire in the formulation and materialization of radical transformations.
